Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy

 

The Delta Academy was created out of an urgent sense that bold action was needed to save our young females (ages 11-14) from the perils of academic failure, low self-esteem, and crippled futures. Delta Academy provides an opportunity for local Delta chapters to enrich and enhance the education that our young teens receive in public schools across the nation. Specifically, we augment their scholarship in math, science, and technology, their opportunities to provide service in the form of leadership through service learning, and their sisterhood, defined as the cultivation service learning, and their sisterhood, defined as the cultivation and maintenance of relationships. A primary goal of the program is to prepare young girls for full participation as leaders in the 21st Century.

 

The Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy is designed for Young Ladies:

• 11 to 14 years of age, who have potential for success, but limited opportunities;

• who are interested in developing their leadership skills;

• identified by schools, churches, youth groups or concerned individuals, as candidates;

• interested in video games, computers, and technology;

• who enjoy learning new things;

• who express interest in math, science, technology or other non-traditional careers;

• who are frequently overlooked or left out of special programs at their schools because of perceptions that they may not be able to overcome financial, personal or academic obstacles in their lives.

Dr. Jeanne L. Noble Delta GEMS Institute

 

GEMS, the acronym for Growing and Empowering Myself Successfully, was created to help African-American girls realize their dreams. The program targets girls between the ages of 14 and 18 who are “at risk” of not achieving academic success. The goals of the Dr. Jeanne L. Noble Delta GEMS Institute are:

• To instill the need to excel academically;

• To provide tools that enable girls to sharpen and enhance their skills to achieve high levels of academic success;

• To assist girls in proper goal setting and planning for their futures-high school and beyond; and

• To create compassionate, caring and community-minded young women by actively involving them in service opportunities.

Scholarship

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., San Diego Alumnae Chapter recognizes and honors female students who are committed to academic excellence, positive leadership, and community service. 

 

Scholarships are limited to African-American female high school seniors who reside in San Diego Alumnae Chapter’s Service Area.  The applicant must demonstrate the following:

 

• Academic achievement (minimum 2.75 G.P.A. on a 4.0 scale or 3.5 G.P.A. on a 5.0 scale in all classes)

 

• Leadership ability as demonstrated by participation in extracurricular activities, community service, and/or holding positions in various organizations.
