80th Anniversary Gala Highlights!

San Diego Alumnae Chapter ended a year-long celebration of 80 years of sisterhood and uncommitted service to the San Diego region at the Eight Years of Excellence Anniversary Gala on September 28, 2019. The gala provided an opportunity to acknowledge the chapters many accomplishments with archives from early chapter activities including the annual Jabberwock in the 1940s to the chapter’s recent request approved by Assembly Woman Dr. Shirley resulting in July being adopted as Uterine Fibroids Awareness month in the State of California. Past Presidents as well as Delta Dears received a special acknowledgement and the Janice Robinson Scholarship was announced honoring our beloved past President and dedicated Soror.

Commitment to Women's Health: Uterine Fibroids

The San Diego Alumnae Chapter (SDAC) has a proud history of programs and activities dedicated to women’s health and in particular, uterine fibroid awareness. SDAC held its first ever Women’s Health Symposium “Uterine Fibroids: The Silent Fight” on April 7, 2018 at O’Farrell Charter School. A panel of esteemed Sorors who included doctors, nurses, and experts in the field presented information on uterine fibroids including the impact on women’s health, particularly for black women, health inequities, data and statistics, and the importance of awareness of action. Additionally, the chapter partnered with several organizations who were present at the event including the California Black Health Network, Her Healing, Live Well San Diego, World Change Her, Tone at Home Fitness, and the National Alumnae Association of Spelman College San Diego Chapter. Over 100 members of the community attended this free event. The event was planned and implemented by Program Planning and Development and demonstrated the chapter’s commitment to the Physical and Mental Health programmatic thrust for the sorority. In an effort to create sustained awareness around the issue beyond this one program, the chapter worked with Assembly Woman Dr. Shirley Weber to adopt July 2018 as Uterine Fibroids Awareness month in the State of California. The following year in July of 2019, the chapter hosted a 2-mile walk in honor of Uterine Fibroids Awareness month. SDAC remains committed to impacting the San Diego community and making a difference!
